HOW CAN I JOIN?

The National Junior Honor Society chapter of Mulholland Middle School is a duly chartered and affiliated chapter of this prestigious NJHS organization. Membership is open to those students who meet the required standards in five areas of evaluation: scholarship, leadership, service, citizenship, and character. Standards for selection are established by the national office of NJHS and revised to meet our local chapter needs. Students are selected to be members by a 5-member Faculty Council, which bestows this honor upon qualified students on behalf of our school's faculty each year.

For the scholarship criterion, a student must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better on a 4.0 scale after three consecutive quarters at the same school. During September, those students who meet this criterion are invited by email (through their LAUSD email) to join the NJHS Candidate Class to complete a Candidate Information Form. This form will provide the Faculty Council with information regarding the candidate's leadership and service. A history of leadership experiences and participation in school or community service is also required. The Faculty Council uses the following standards to determine a candidate's membership in NJHS:

  • A completed Student Activity Information Form that has at least two of the four sections filled in thoughtfully. The candidate demonstrates an effort to complete the form to the best of his/her ability. Considering this, the Faculty Council sees fit that proving more than Academic Achievement will meet the criteria for this organization.

  • A completed Letter of Intent that demonstrates to the best of the candidate's ability that he/she will fulfill the obligations and requirements of membership in NJHS (maximum of two pages)

  • The Faculty Council will review the Disciplinary Records to determine each candidate's character. An evaluation of the Information Forms will determine membership. A majority vote of the Council is necessary for selection. Candidates will receive notification regarding selection or non-selection. Following notification, a formal induction ceremony is held at the school (or virtually) to recognize all the newly selected members.

  • Once inducted, new members must maintain the same level of performance (or better) in all five criteria that led to their selection. These obligations include:

  1. Regular attendance at chapter meetings and leadership forums held throughout during the school year.

  2. Participation in the chapter service projects.

  3. Completion of ten hours of documented service per school year each year of membership.

Students or parents who have questions regarding the selection process or membership obligations can contact Carmen Feldman at cbf17711@lausd.net or Yesenia Karamanos yxk6686@lausd.net.
